Wet Paint Analysis

DENSITY

Density Test Definition Mass per unit volume of a material at a specified temperature.
Standards
  • ASTM D 4138, D 1475, D 2805
  • BS 3900 A 19
  • DIN 53217
  • ISO 2811
Significance
  • If density is not within specification, there is a high probability of error in batch charging.
  • Density acts as an important check on solids content of paint.

NON VOLATILE MATTER

non-volatile Definition The volume of the dried coating divided by the volume of liquid coating, multiplied by 100, provides the volume percent non-volatile matter inthe total liquid coating.
Standards
  • ASTM D 2697
Significance
  • Indicates the weight solids in paint.
  • Higher solids means higher coverage

Viscosity by Ford Cup

ford-cup Definition Viscosity is the force per unit area that resists the flow of two parallel fluid layers.
Standards
  • ASTM D 1200
Significance
  • Flow & levelling properties.
  • Anti-sag properties.

Volume Solids

Definition Defined as the total volume of non-volatile solids present in one litre of paint.
Standards
  • ASTM D 2697
Significance
  • A measure of spreading capacity of paint
  • Higher volume solids product will give higher coverage at a given DFT.
  • Higher volume solids products are being preferred due to VOC regulations in developed countries.

VISCOSITY

viscosity2 Definition Stormer viscometers
Standards
  • ASTM D 562
Significance
  • Paddle is immersed in the paint and load in weight applied throught string
  • Paddle is immersed in the paint and load in weight applied throught string
  • Stroboscopic timer will indicate the motionless lines when 200 rmp is achieved

Blast Clean Test

blast Definition The pottassuim ferricyanide test for water-soluble iron salt that from at the bottom of rust pits after blast-cleaning.
International Standards
  • BS 5493
Significance
  • Simply spray a film of deionised water on an area of the blast-cleaned steel.held the test paper against the surface for about 10 seconds
  • Any soluble iron salts present are drawn out of the rust pits by capillary action and react with the potassium ferricyanide to form blue spots
  • The presence of blue spots on the test paper indicates that the surface should be re-blasted.

Bresle Test

bresle Definition International Standards: ISO 8502-6 and ISO 8502-9 Contaminating the surface prior to the coating application due to salts such as chlorides and sulphates
Standards
Significance
  • Take 10 ml of distilled water into the beaker.
  • Determine the conductivity.
  • Apply the Bresle patch on the test surface.
  • Inject and extract back 2.5 ml of test water up to 10 cycles.
  • Transfer the test water back into the beaker.
  • Check the conductivity again.
  • Multiply reading by 0.4 = quantity of salt in g/cm = ppm

Wet Film Thickness

welfilm Definition Dete rmined as being between the clearance of the deepest notch face wetted and the clearance of the next deeper notch face not wetted by the film.
Standards
  • ASTM D 4414-A
  • DFT = WFT x % Vol.Solid
  • The wet-film thickness is determind as being between the clearance of the deepest notch face wetted and the clearance of the next deeper notch face not wetted by the film.
