Accelerated UV Weatherometer Tests

Density Test Definition Simulates the effect of sunlight and condensation on paint, coated metals, plastic, fabrics, and other substrates. These tests are typically comprised of alternating cycles of QUV and Xenon exposure and moisture (condensation). These tests are typically combined with gloss (ASTM D523) and/or color (ASTM D2244) readings before and after exposure.
Standards
  • ASTM G 154
Significance
  • SSPC has multiple chambers available for UV exposure and color (ΔE) testing to ensure quick turnaround.

Humidity tester

humiditytest Definition Provides a controlled accelerated corrosive environment to evaluate the relative corrosion resistance of the coating, substrate, or part itself.
Standards
  • ASTM D2247,ISO 6270
Significance
  • It is similar to Salt spray testing, though without the salt component.
  • Parts or panels are placed inside a chamber and exposed continually for a specified period then evaluated for resistance to corrosion and/or blistering.

Salt spray test

spraytast Definition Standardized and popular corrosion test method, used to check corrosion resistance of materials and surface coatings. Usually, the materials to be tested aremetallic(although stone, ceramics, and polymers may also be tested) and finished with a surface coating which is intended to provide a degree ofcorrosion protection to the underlying metal.
Standards
  • ASTM B 117, ISO 7253
Significance
  • Accelerated corrosion test that produces a corrosive attack to coated samples in order to evaluate (mostly comparatively) the suitability of the coating for use as a protective finish.
  • The appearance of corrosion products (rustor other oxides) is evaluated after a pre-determined period of time.
  • Test duration depends on the corrosion resistance of the coating; generally, the more corrosion resistant the coating is, the longer the period of testing before the appearance of corrosion/ rust.

Immersion Test

immersion Definition This method provides a means to assess the ability of a protective coating to resist degradation by chemicals and to protect the liquid cargo from contamination by either the substrate or coating, based on visual observations.
Standards
  • ASTM D 6943
Significance
  • Other measures of degradation, such as changes in weight or dimensions of the coating material, or chemical changes to the cargo, may be used to assess this protective ability as mutually agreed upon between contracting parties.
  • Immersion Test immersion in various solution for 72 hours, 7 days, 1 month.
  • Change in appeareance, Blisters, change in dimensions, weight.

Cathodic Disbondment Test

cathodic Definition Designed to estimate the resistance to disbondmentdue to cathodic reaction at the defect site.
Standards
  • ASTM G-8, 42
  • 95 Room Temperature & High temperature
Significance
  • Test method provides accelerated conditions for cathodic disbondment to occur and provides a measure of resistance of coat ings to this type of action.
  • Also used in civil engineering for evaluation of epoxy coated rebars to evaluate effect of cathodic protection.
  • Multiple coatings can be tested for the assessment of the resistance to separation of individual layers of the coating from each other.

Cold & Heating Chamber

cold Definition Cold & Heating Chamber
Range
  • - 40 OC to 60 OC
Significance

Cathodic Disbondment Test

cathodictest Definition Resistance to disbondment due to cathodic reaction at the defect.
Standards
  • ASTM G-8 , G-42 , G-95
  • R.T : 21-25C & H.T . 50-120C
Significance
  • Voltage for steel : -1.45 to -1.55V
  • Duration : 30 days

Water vapor permeability test

watertest Definition Water vapor permeability test
Standards
  • ASTM D 1653 , E 96
Significance
