Dry Film Properties

Dry Film Thickness

dryfilm Definition Measurement of coating thickness on the applied substrate.
Standards
  • ASTMD 6132,ISO2808-UltrasonicTechnique. range - 0.5 to 150 mils
  • ASTM E 376 - Magnetic adhesion property through eddy currents
Significance
  • Ferrousmodelswillmeasureallnon-ferromagnetic coatings on steel and iron.
  • Non-Ferrous models will measure all non-conductive, non-Non-Ferrous substrates.

Impact Test

Impact Test Definition This simple to use gauge is ideal for evaluating the resistance of a coating to impact, such as elongation, cracking or peeling.
Standards
  • ASTM G-14
  • ASTM D 2794
  • IS, DIN, ISO
Specifications
  • Specimen Size: 0.025 in. or 0.63 mm
  • Indentor Size: 0.5 in. or 12.7 mm
  • Weight of Tub: 1.361 Kg
  • Drop Range: 0.61 to 1.22 m (2 to 4 ft)
  • Specimen Size:0.025 in. or 0.63mm
  • If no cracks are evident, repeat the procedure at a greater height, increasing 1 in. (25mm) at a time.

Pencil Hardness Test

Pencil Hardness Test Definition The Pencil Hardness Tester is a simple and effective technique used to evaluate the hardness and resistance to scratching of coatings.
Standards
  • ASTM D 3363
Test Method
  • The Pencil Hardness Tester is a simple and affective technique to evaluate the hardness and resistance to scratching of coatings.
  • The test method allows the used of pencils which have a known hardness grade to be moved over the surface to be tested at a fixed angle and pressure.
  • Allows the use of pencils which have a known hardness grade to be moved over the surface to be tested at a fixed angle and pressure.

Flexibility Test

flexibility Definition Also known as conical mandrel testis a mechanical testerused to determine the effects of bending on the elasticity, adhesion and elongation properties of cured coatings on sheet metal.
Standards
  • ASTM D 522
  • BS 3900-E11
Significance

Cross Hatch Adhesion Test

Cross Hatch Adhesion Test Definition The Cross Hatch Cutter evaluates the adhesion resistance of coatings by cutting a right-angled lattice pattern through the coating to the substrate.
Standards
  • ASTM D 3359
Significance
  • 1 mm cutter is suitable for coatings under 60 microns
  • 2 mm cutter is suitable for coatings over 60 microns
  • Multiple coatings can be tested for the assessment of the resistance to separation of individual layers of the coating from each other.

Scratch Hardness Test

scratchhardness Definition Defined as resistance to indentation or scratching.
International Standards
  • ASTM D 2197
  • BF 3900
  • D2197
  • ISO 1518
  • Range 50 gm to 10 kg
Significance
  • The scratching needle is a hardened steel hemispherical tip of 1 mm dia.
  • Clam the panel on the DC circuit panel
  • Place weight on the holder above the needle
  • Start the motor to make a scratch on the coting
  • Observed the scratch for penetration upto the substrate
  • Failure of the coting is the indicated by deflaction in the current needle due to completion of the circuit
  • A Voltmeter indicates the contact, when the needle touches the base metal. The automatic systems disengage the needle from the panel when returning to home
  • position. Failure of the coating is indicated by deflection in the current needle due to completion of circuit

SHORE Hardness A & D

shore Definition Measures the hardness of the surface of the coating.
Standards
  • ASTM D 2240 ASTM D 2240 Fiberglass, Aluminum,Soft Metals,Plastics,Painted Surface
Significance
  • Take the measurement at last 12 mm form the edge of the material
  • the material must be at last 6 mm thick
  • Required pressure must be applied for 15 seconds
  • This force should be max 4.55 kg for a type D durometer
  • Meaning of a durometer reading no indent sign :100 If indentation upto:2.5 mm :0
  • Measurements taken at 12mm from the edge of material
  • Material must be at least 6mm thick

Holiday Detector Test

holidayimg Definition The Holiday Dete ctor is a DC Holiday Tester that tests and detects pinholes and flaws in insulated coatings on conductive substrates.
Standards
  • ASTM D 4787
  • ASTM G 62
  • ISO 2746
  • BS 1344-11
  • Pinholes in coatings invisible to naked eyes
  • Detector counts pinholes and sounds alarm
  • Allows instant repair of pinholes
  • Especially suitable for large diameters and enables reliable testing of the complete tube in one or two operations only

Taber Abrasion Test

taberabrasion Definition Designed to perform accelerated wear tests on a variety of specimens.
Standards
  • ASTM D 4060
Significance
  • Wheels shall be 12.7mm thick and have an external diameter of 51.9mm and in no case less than 44.4mm
  • Wheels CS-17,10 H-10, 18, 22 & OTHERS

Pull off Adhesion Test

pullofadhesion Definition Measures the adhesion bond strength of applied coatings with ease, and precision
Standards
  • ASTM D 4060
Significance
  • The adhesion is measured by the tensile pull on a Dolly glued to the coating surface.
  • The force is applied through the centre of the Dolly by a hydraulically loaded pin.
  • This ensures an exactly central point-loading of the force.
